SEI Policy Brief. Stockholm Environment Institute, Stockholm. Sweden has successfully begun a transition to a low-carbon energy system, reducing domestic greenhouse gas emissions by 24% from 1990 to 2014 and by more than 40% since the mid-1970s. In terms of energy for heating, the share of fossil fuels is now below 5%.
Sweden’s Smart Energy ecosystem brings together leading suppliers of smart grids, district heating and cooling, and innovative solutions for energy storage. These key players are on a mission to speed up the transition to clean electricity and carbon neutrality – in Sweden and globally.
There has been a shift in Sweden from mapping domestic storage capacity to focusing on near- to mid-term storage of CO 2 in Norway. Previous mappings of the potential for CCS in the Baltic Sea region have included Swedish storage capacity [18, 45], however, there has still not been any development of storage infrastructure.
Sweden could benefit from carbon dioxide storage opportunities abroad. Carbon capture and storage (CCS), including bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), could contribute to climate change mitigation strategies. However, the 2020s is not the first time that CCS is high on the agenda.
ESKILSTUNA – Sweden is a global leader in building a low-carbon economy, with the lowest share of fossil fuels in its primary energy supply among all IEA member countries, and the second-lowest carbon-intensive economy.
Sweden has little potential of its own for CO 2 storage, but at present no project has been initiated to enable storage. At the same time, Norway has invested in making a product of transporting and storing CO 2. How does Norway's investment affect the possibility of CCS in Sweden?
