Demand response (DR) and energy storage systems (ESS) are two commonly considered solutions due to the short time required going from seed to flower, but also when looking from a cost perspective.
However, the demand response resources and energy storage systems do not necessarily guarantee additional benefits based on the applied period when both are operated simultaneously, i.e., if the energy storage system is used only to increase the performance reliability of demand response resources, the benefit decreases.
Several of the interviewed DSO representatives highlighted that they used to have the option of load demand measures regarding certain electric heaters in the Swedish industry, before the unbundling of the Swedish electricity market.
Demand response and distributed generation are two tools that could be used to restructure the energy system in a way that is less CO2-intensive.
Furthermore, for a Swedish DSO, traditional investments toward increasing grid capacity include investments in physical components, such as transformers, electricity cables, and electricity meters.
However, the power usage plan of the end-user cannot completely guarantee the performance reliability upon the reduction request, and hybrid operation with ESS with high control flexibility has been highlighted as a measure of improving its value as a stable resource on the demand side [ 2, 3 ].
