We also identify future research opportunities for PCM in thermal energy storage. Solid-liquid phase change materials (PCMs) have been studied for decades, with application to thermal management and energy storage due to the large latent heat with a relatively low temperature or volume change.
PCMs (Phase Change Materials) can be used to enhance the thermal properties of bitumen. They are suitable for building applications with melting point ranges of 19-28°C for organic PCMs and 25-35°C for inorganic PCMs. PCMs are used to store and release thermal energy with a heat of fusion varying from 120 to 180 kJ/kg.
Therefore, PCM sensible features had a share of 54% in energy saving. Under these circumstances, at least 40% of the year, PCM never participates in phase change and remains in the solid phase.
In this paper, a comprehensive review has been carried out on PCM microcapsules for thermal energy storage. Five aspects have been discussed in this review: classification of PCMs, encapsulation shell materials, microencapsulation techniques, PCM microcapsules’ characterizations, and thermal applications.
To achieve a high heat storage density at small volume change, most applied PCM undergo a phase change between solid and liquid; the phase change is then called melting and solidification. Some PCM however undergo a phase change between two different solid phases. Thus, in general, PCM refer to a phase change on heating and on cooling.
Building materials are part of the building structure, and integrated PCM increases the heat storage ability. If the temperature in the building rises above the phase change temperature, heat is taken up by the PCM in the building material, thereby cooling the building interior until the PCM is totally melted.
