Like smart buildings, both active and passive measures are crucial in enhancing urban energy performance through urban design and planning . Urban design significantly influences energy consumption, with the urban form and structure being key to reducing energy demands [15, 73].
Urban energy use consists of four key components: building operational energy, building embodied energy, transportation energy, and road and infrastructure energy. Building operational energy is defined as the energy used for heating, cooling, lighting, and operating of appliances of buildings.
An urban energy use model is an integrated tool which considers different components of urban energy use and applies strengths of data-driven and simulation-based approaches to increase the accuracy of the urban energy use estimation.
An integrated urban energy model is a tool that enables modeling components of urban operational and embodied energy, providing a more holistic image of urban energy use. Understanding the interrelation between various components and the trade-offs between different planning and design strategies for more sustainable cities is facilitated by this model.
Urban design significantly influences energy consumption, with the urban form and structure being key to reducing energy demands [15, 73]. Integrating smart technologies and software into urban design enhances the effectiveness of these measures [49, 74].
Urban energy use simulation tools, such as CitySim, EnergyPLAN, E-GIS, Urban Building Energy Models (UBEMs), Urban Modeling Interface (UMI), and City Building Energy Saver (CityBES), function by estimating energy use at the city scale through a GIS-based platform, using 2D GIS and/or 3D GIS with CityGML.
