A significant number of 5G base stations (gNBs) and their backup energy storage systems (BESSs) are redundantly configured, possessing surplus capacity during non-peak traffic hours.
Optimization of the charging strategy can be studied based on the time-of-use power price, which is aimed at the income of the battery swapping station considering constraints such as the charging and discharging capacity of the BSS and the electricity demand of electric vehicles [ 59 ].
BSS requires high power (33–11 kV) and varying charging levels for electrical safety. The BSS mechanical framework comprises vehicle platforms, battery lifts, vehicle alignment equipment rollers, battery conveyor shuttles, and battery storage rails and racks. Swapping EV battery packs should not cause mechanical damage.
A Na–S battery, also known as a liquid metal battery, is constructed from sodium and sulfur. It offers high energy density, high efficiency of charge and discharge (89%–92%), and a long cycle life. The materials used in its fabrication are inexpensive.
Overall, the usage of BSS as a battery to load during peak loads can offer several benefits to the grid. Still, it requires careful planning and management to ensure its effectiveness and reliability (Fig. 6). This paper discusses the concept of battery swapping stations (BSS) for electric vehicles (EVs).
