Rail vehicles with onboard energy storage systems (OESSs) have gained increasing interest in recent years. These vehicles can minimize costs by reducing maintenance and installation requirements of the electrified infrastructure, and offer improved energy efficiency and potential catenary-free operation.
Energy storage solutions onboard railway vehicles are implemented using various technologies, with supercapacitors being one of the most common. Supercapacitors have short charging and discharging times, comparable to braking times of urban light rail vehicles.

Rail systems with discontinuous electrification can employ storage units of reduced size compared to non-electrified systems. However, the sizing problem for Onboard Energy Storage Systems (OESS) in electrified networks poses many design challenges.
The installation and maintenance of energy storage units do not directly affect rail system operation if a certain overall degree of system redundancy is assured. However, attention must be paid to the displacement of the storage units along the route to minimize transmission losses while containing capital costs.
Electrification is vital in rail transport due to several reasons. It reduces energy demand per passenger-km by lowering losses from friction and drag, improving energy efficiency of drives, enabling braking energy recuperation, and increasing load capacities. Additionally, it plays a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
