The Swedish Energy Agency is now granting Stegra state aid to build the world's first fully integrated steel plant where iron is manufactured using fossil-free hydrogen made from water and fossil-free electricity. The state aid is provided through the Swedish government-initiated Industrial Leap programme and is approved by the European Commission.
Earlier this year, the European Commission approved, under the EU State aid rules, a €265 million Swedish measure made available in part through the Recovery and Resilience Facility to support Stegra (previously H2GS AB) in setting up a large-scale green steel plant.
No – this is reality: a totally new, green steel facility to be built in northern Sweden making use of SMS group expertise and equipment. This hydrogen-based direct reduction plant will be fully integrated, transforming virgin raw materials into finished steel. Works will start in 2022 and the site is expected to be operational by 2025.
13 February 2024 SWEDEN – The energy storages are being built in Falköping (16 MW), Karlskrona (16 MW), Katrineholm (20 MW), Mjölby (8 MW), Sandviken (20 MW), Vaggeryd (11 MW), Värnamo (20 MW) and Västerås (11 MW). A storage with a power of 20 MW correlates to what a Swedish town with 40,000 inhabitants on average consumes during peak hours.
The steel plant will produce 2.1 million tonnes of sponge iron and 2.5 million tonnes of steel per year in the first phase. The plant will be the first of its kind and is central to full-scale industrial production of low-carbon steel. “The Swedish support programmes are essential for the establishment of new large-scale industry in Sweden.
The research results now presented in a final report to the Swedish Energy Agency span from 2018 to 2024, with a focus on scaling up technical solutions from the laboratory to industrial scale, developing an industrial process practice and achieving an integrated value chain for hydrogen-based iron and steelmaking.
