Given that rail construction is so important to China’s economic development, it is essential and meaningful to study the energy use of rail transportation. Rails have experienced the development stage of steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, and electric locomotives.
The rapid development of China’s high-speed rail has greatly driven the optimization of the energy consumption structure in the rail sector, which has changed from coal-based in the past to electricity-based currently. Electricity consumption exceeded oil consumption for the first time in 2006 and became the largest fuel consumed by rails.
China's railway has been experiencing rapid growth recently. The achievement of solar energy for the increasing electricity consumption in the rail sector attracts significant attentions. In this paper, the available solar energy on the covered land and trackside land in the rail itself is assessed for further utilization.
UAE - Etihad Rail is a national rail system built by the CRCC. More plans are there to build more rail lines. Qatar - CRCC formed a JV with local company HBK and the JV constructed the Lusail Stadium where the final of FIFA World Cup 2022 was hosted along with other games and the final ceremony.
In this process, the fuel consumption of rail transportation is experiencing the substitution of coal and oil by electricity. Therefore, a study on inter-fuel substitution in China’s rail sector is of great significance to the development of China’s rail transport system, energy conservation and emission reduction in rail transportation.
