Electro-thermal energy storage (MAN ETES) systems couple the electricity, heating and cooling sectors, converting electrical energy into thermal energy. This can then be used for heating or cooling, or reconverted into electricity.
In the district heating (DH) sector, a well-established VMS is sensible thermal energy storage (TES), which is used to manage both short-term and long-term variations.
Heat storage in separate TES modules usually requires active components (fans or pumps) and control systems to transport stored energy to the occupant space. Heat storage tanks, various types of heat exchanges, solar collectors, air ducts, and indoor heating bodies can be considered elements of an active system.
Thermal energy storage (TES) systems store heat or cold for later use and are classified into sensible heat storage, latent heat storage, and thermochemical heat storage. Sensible heat storage systems raise the temperature of a material to store heat. Latent heat storage systems use PCMs to store heat through melting or solidifying.
Heat storage material type based TES systems use a wide variety of materials for thermal energy storage. These materials must possess suitable thermo–physical properties like favorable melting point, high latent heat, high specific heat, and high thermal conductivity, among others.
The objective of thermal protection is to decrease or shift the heating/cooling load of a system, while the objective of an energy storage system is to store the thermal energy released from the system on demand [215, 221, 222].
