An EPC arrangement involves an external organisation, known as an ESCO, implementing a project to deliver energy efficiency or a renewable energy project. The ESCO uses the stream of income from the cost savings, or the renewable energy produced, to repay the costs of the project.
Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) is a form of ‘creative financing’ for capital improvement that allows funding energy upgrades from cost reductions. Among the reasons for considering EPC are adversity to assuming debt, borrowing limits, and budgetary restraints.
Under an EPC arrangement, an external organisation (ESCO) implements a project to deliver energy efficiency, or a renewable energy project, and uses the stream of income from the cost savings, or the renewable energy produced, to repay the costs of the project, including the costs of the investment.
A typical EPC project is delivered by an energy service company (ESCO) and the contract is accompanied with a guarantee for energy savings. EPC is increasingly taken in use in the professional market (firms and the public sector), but is less common in the residential sector market.
EPC (Energy Performance Contracting) is a means to deliver infrastructure improvements to facilities that lack energy engineering skills, manpower or management time, capital funding, understanding of risk, or technology information. Cash-poor, yet creditworthy customers are therefore good potential clients for EPC. Figure 1 illustrates the concept.
It took careful consideration to decide on what kind of energy use should be included in the EPC competition. This choice would determine what would later be included in the guarantee for energy savings, and thus, ideally, it should include a high proportion of the total energy consumption.
