This study suggests a novel investment strategy for sizing a supercapacitor in a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for frequency regulation. In this progress, presents hybrid operation strategy considering lifespan of the BESS. This supercapacitor-battery hybrid system can slow down the aging process of the BESS.
To illustrate the effectiveness of optimal sizing of a supercapacitor in HESS through case studies, it is assumed that the curve fitting coefficient, a and b in Eq. (12), are set to be 0.795 and 5000 cycles, respectively. Table 4 shows the BESS characteristics. The capacity of the BESS for frequency regulation is 24 MW/6 MWh.
