It can be said that the energy storage process occurs either between NiO and NiOOH or the NiO changes to Ni (OH) 2 due to alkaline electrolyte then the energy storage occurs between Ni (OH) 2 and NiOOH. In both cases, in the reduction phase, electrolyte ions undergo intercalation into oxide lattices and then deintercalate the lattice on oxidation.
NiO was historically the first material, which proved to be a test-bed for the understanding of strongly correlated electronic systems.
Analogously, only spin up electrons are free to transmit for NiO. However, all spin up and spin down electrons could participate in conduction process in Ni/NiO heterojunction, which can enhance the electrical conductivity and ensure the rapid charge transfer during the electrocatalytic process of Ni/NiO 150.
Here, a Ni/NiO hierarchical heterojunction is synthesized by an interface engineering strategy. The developed strategy endows the electrocatalysts adequately exposed catalytic active sites, optimized kinetics, including rapid charge and mass transfer, bubble release, and reduced intermediate adsorption free energy.

There is a wide variety of electrolytes for NiO-based electrode materials of the SCs, however, the mechanism of charge storage changes for different electrolytes.
