New York State aims to reach a target of 3.0 GW by 2030 for energy storage. To help reach these targets, NYSERDA and the Department of Public Service (DPS), in conjunction with stakeholders, developed the New York State Energy Storage Roadmap.
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the New York State Public Service Commission approved a new framework for the State to achieve a nation-leading six gigawatts of energy storage by 2030, which represents at least 20 percent of the peak electricity load of New York State.
On December 28, 2022, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the New York State Department of Public Service (NYSDPS) submitted to the NYS Public Service Commission a new Energy Storage Roadmap entitled, “New York’s 6 GW Energy Storage Roadmap: Policy Options for Continued Growth in Energy Storage”.
New York needs 4.8 GW of multi-day storage by 2030 and 35 GW by 2040 to reliably integrate renewables and achieve decarbonization goals. This study identified a 4.8 GW need for multi-day energy storage in the least-cost 2030 portfolio, which grows to 35 GW by 2040.
It proposes to invest an estimated $1 billion - $1.7 billion through 2030 to support new programs and funding to deploy large-scale, distributed, and residential energy storage. New York State adopted its first Energy Storage Roadmap in December of 2018.
The Roadmap analysis recognizes the critical role for energy storage in meeting New York’s climate goals and enabling an emissions-free electric grid. It proposes to invest an estimated $1 billion - $1.7 billion through 2030 to support new programs and funding to deploy large-scale, distributed, and residential energy storage.
Both renewables and energy storage are considered key to achieving targets that include 70% renewable energy on the New York grid by 2030, and the deployment of 6GW of energy storage by that date.
