Li-ion batteries have a theoretical infinite lifespan, but their performance decreases over time due to cycling, elevated temperature, and aging. Manufacturers typically specify the life of Li-ion batteries in consumer products as being between 300 and 500 discharge/charge cycles.
In comparison with other commercial rechargeable batteries, Li-ion batteries are characterized by higher specific energy, higher energy density, higher energy efficiency, a longer cycle life, and a longer calendar life.
The expected capacity loss of Li-ion batteries over 250 full discharge cycles was uniform. Eleven new Li-ion batteries were tested, starting at a capacity of 88–94% and decreasing to 73–84%.
Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine. There is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles to prolong life. The exception may be a periodic calibration of the fuel gauge on a smart battery or intelligent device (See BU-603: How to Calibrate a “Smart” Battery)
Charging and discharging Li-ion batteries only partially prolongs battery life, but it reduces utilization. In Case 1, a 75–65% State of Charge (SoC) offers the longest cycle life but delivers only 90,000 energy units (EU) and utilizes only 10% of the battery. In Case 2, a 75–25% SoC has 3,000 cycles (to 90% capacity) and delivers 150,000 EU, utilizing 50% of the battery.
Li-ion batteries are readily flammable, as they use alkylcarbonate solvents to ensure the formation of a solid electrolyte interface on the negative electrode. To address this, research is being conducted to replace these solvents with non-flammable ones or to add fire suppressants.
