Heshu Yones was murdered by her father, Abdalla Yones, in an honour killing on 12 October 2002. The 16-year-old Iraqi Kurd from Acton, London, was killed for becoming too 'westernised' and for engaging in a relationship against her father's orders.
A STRICT Muslim father who cut his daughter?s throat because he felt she had become too Westernised was yesterday given a life sentence for her murder. Heshu Yones, 16, was beaten for months before the ?honour killing? and had planned to run away from home, begging her father to leave her alone.
He was in hospital for several months and claimed his daughter was the victim of Al-Qaeda, saying extremists had broken into their flat, killed Heshu and attacked him before throwing him off the balcony. But yesterday he became the first person in Britain to plead guilty to murder in a so-called ?honour killing? case.
He began a life sentence in October 2003 for the murder of Heshu a year earlier. It was the first time in British legal history that a plea of ‘honour killing’ had been entered. Abdullah said he stabbed Heshu to death at their West London home, because he feared she was becoming westernised.
Heshu, who was described as popular and fun-loving, planned to run away from home after starting a relationship with an 18-year-old Lebanese teacher. In a letter to her parents, apparently showing she planned to run away, Heshu wrote: "Bye Dad, sorry I was so much trouble.
The murder of Heshu Yones triggered today's continuing police investigation into the warning signs of honour crimes. The team set up by Metropolitan Police, but involving officers around the country, are examining 100 murders from the last decade in an effort to better understand and predict the signs of a potential honour killing or ongoing abuse.
