Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and hydrogen (H 2) are promising technologies for short- and long-duration energy storage, respectively. A hybrid LIB-H 2 energy storage system could thus offer a more cost-effective and reliable solution to balancing demand in renewable microgrids.
By adding battery energy storage (BES) to a and proper battery charge and discharge management, the microgrid operating costs can be significantly reduced. But energy storage costs are added to the microgrid costs, and energy storage size must be determined in a way that minimizes the total operating costs and energy storage costs.
The microgrid hybrid energy storage system has both the microgrid topology and the storage system while energy needs to be controlled, and its operation control strategy is suitable for the combination of the above two methods [ 16 ].
Microgrids are small-scale energy systems with distributed energy resources, such as generators and storage systems, and controllable loads forming an electrical entity within defined electrical limits. These systems can be deployed in either low voltage or high voltage and can operate independently of the main grid if necessary .
The energy management system (EMS) in this paper is designed specifically for DC power storage in a microgrid with multiple different energy storage units, the charging and discharging of lithium-ion batteries and SCs are controlled by bidirectional DC–DC converters and the battery is based on two different droop coefficient algorithms.
Note that the impact on microgrid composition is modest up until a 45% decrease in LIB energy storage capacity cost, after which the LIB power conversion capacity grows significantly, indicating a possible tipping point to use LIB for longer-term energy storage.
