In the course of the energy transition, storage technologies are required for the fluctuating and intermittently occurring electrical energy. The vanadium flow battery (VFB) is an especially promising electrochemical battery type for megawatt applications due to its unique characteristics.

How much vanadium will be produced by 2031?

The VRFB deployment forecast by Guidehouse Insights would equate to between 127,500 and 173,800 tons of new vanadium demand per year by 2031, according to Vanitec calculations based off Guidehouse’s projection. That would be more than twice as much vanadium as is currently produced annually today.

Why is vanadium important?

Vanadium is critical for Europe’s green transition and strategic autonomy. It is not yet produced in significant volumes in the region, without a reliance on non-European feedstock. Instead of mining for resources, we at Novana recycle industrial side streams into high purity vanadium in Pori, Finland, close to our Nordic supply chain.
