12.02.2024 - The commissioning of Axpo’s first large-scale battery storage facility in Sweden, announced today, marks the latest milestone in the expansion of its battery business. The 20MW/20MWh plant, connected to the electricity grid by local energy company Landskrona Energi, follows several projects in Switzerland and Europe.
Northvolt is one of the companies that has received support from the Swedish Energy Agency. When they started, few believed that it was possible to start large-scale battery production in Sweden, since Asia was so far ahead.
But as the battery industry develops and grows in many countries simultaneously, investors, materials, and expertise become scarce. If Sweden is to succeed in the battery field, competence will be required from both Sweden and the rest of the world.
The new 20MW/20MWh lithium-ion based battery storage facility will be used to help balance electricity supply in the region and has been connected to the grid by Landskrona Energi, a local energy supplier. With 20 MW, around 4000 households could be supplied with electricity for one hour.
In Sept. 2017, it announced that Switzerland’s ABB had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to supply and support a new lithium-ion battery factory being built in Sweden by Northvolt. At that time, production was expected to begin in 2020. The following year then saw a flurry of financing announcements by Northvolt.
