FSRI releases a new report investigating a near-miss lithium-ion battery energy storage system explosion.
That is one of the conclusions of a report released on Monday about the April 2019 explosion at the McMicken Energy Storage facility near Grand Avenue and Deer Valley Road, owned by Arizona Public Service Co.
The system had no barriers between battery modules to prevent one overheating module from spreading to the next and creating a cascading effect, according to the report. This led to a build up of flammable gasses in the building. Those gasses exploded when the firefighters eventually opened the door and entered.
The flammable gases that accumulated inside the ESS posed an immediate explosion hazard. The toxicity of the gas/vapor mixture leaking from the ESS was immediately dangerous to fire department personnel and civilians nearby.
The HAZMAT team opened a door to the ESS to assess whether an active fire was present.
