HYBRIT has built a pilot hydrogen storage plant in Svartöberget, in Luleå, Sweden. The tests in the pilot storage will take place in 2022-2024. The pilot hydrogen storage plant connected to the pilot plant for direct reduction by a pipeline and all hydrogen to be used in the storage is produced in the direct reduction pilotplant.
The plan is to build the new hydrogen gas storage facility 25-35 meters below the ground surface on LKAB's land in Svartöberget, close to the pilot plant currently under construction on SSAB's site in Luleå. The storage facility is expected to operate from 2022 to 2024.
Construction of the hydrogen storage facility began in May 2021 and the plan is for the plant to come into operation during the summer of 2022. The tests will then continue until 2024. Hydrogen storage will be tested in the storage facility using known technology known as LRC (Lined Rock Cavern).
