It is worth noting that so high η at high electric fields has rarely been observed in present linear polymer dielectrics, confirming COC would be a promising candidate for energy storage. To evaluate the performance of COC films at high temperature, we measure Ue and η of COC films at 80 °C, 120 °C, and 140 °C, which is shown in Fig. 5 b–d.
Benefiting low leakage current and dielectric loss, its maximum discharge energy density at 25 °C, 80 °C, 120 °C, and 140 °C are 5.08 J/cm3, 3.40 J/cm 3, 2.93 J/cm 3 and 2.32 J/cm 3, respectively. The rigid ring structure of COC endows it superior high-temperature energy storage performance than BOPP and PI.
As expected, it is found that η of COC film is still above 97.8 % when electrical field strength reaches to 600 MV/m in Fig. 5 a. It is worth noting that so high η at high electric fields has rarely been observed in present linear polymer dielectrics, confirming COC would be a promising candidate for energy storage.
The energy storage performance of COC is comparable to BOPP at RT and superior than PI at high temperature. The breakdown strength of COC was almost not affected after it was treated in acid, alkali and salt solution. Successful preparation of micron COC film by uniaxial stretching make it promising to be applied in film capacitors.
One important change introduced by the CoC, outside of general increases to efficiency requirements, was the addition of a new test point at 10% load in recognition of the fact that efficiency drops significantly at light load and many applications spend significant amount of time in this state.
At 120 °C, the Ue and η of COC under 476 MV/m are 2.93 J/cm 3 and 89.2 %, and the Ue and η of BOPP under 400 MV/m are 1.63 J/cm 3 and 71.5 %, respectively. At 140 °C, the η of PI dramatically drops due to increased conduction loss, for instance, its η is only 24.1 % at 300 MV/m.
